Accidents at Work: Your rights
If you go to work and earn an honest day’s living then the view of the law is that you ought to be able to get on with that job without having to worry about whether or not you’ll be coming home injured.
That is why employer’s have got a responsibility to their employees to make sure that the workplace is safe and that they have all the proper protective equipment and training and that their work equipment functions properly and isn’t faulty. If employers don’t do this and someone gets injured then that is where a claim can be made against them.
Accidents at work in Swansea and South Wales
Across Wales last year there were nearly 6,000 reported injuries. Over 1,168 were classed as serious and 4,680 required the employee to have more than 3 days off work. There were also unfortunately 18 deaths.
One of the most dangerous types of work is construction. During 2009/10, the HSE reported 53 workers were injured in Swansea while working in construction, second only to Cardiff in the number of injuries and deaths.
In construction for example the HSE have said that what they look for is that:
- Jobs that involve working at height have been identified and properly planned to ensure that appropriate precautions are in place
- Equipment is correctly installed / assembled, inspected and maintained and used properly
- Sites are well organised, to avoid trips and falls
- Walkways and stairs are free from obstructions
- Work areas are clear of unnecessary materials and waste
